Students from the Basdeo Bissoondoyal College and those from the Modern College participated in the finals for the inter-college football tournament yesterday. When the match was over, students of the defeated team got violent and expressed their anger by targeting the other group, resulting in a number of students being injured.
To make college life a little more bearable, it is punctuated by extra-curriculum activities, including sports events, such that students do not emancipate academically only to the expense of other fields. Some, though, view these events more of an opportunity to do all else but emancipate themselves.
Yesterday, during the finals of the inter-college football tournament organised by the Mauritius Broadcasting Corporation (MBC), some students engaged themselves in a brawl. The event took place at the stadium situated at Quartier-Militaire. The Modern College of Centre-de-Flacq and the Professor Basdeo Bissoondoyal College had made it to the finals. According to what has been reported, some students from the latter college began throwing projectiles onto their counterparts from Modern College.
In the aftermath of the brawl that was thus initiated, many students have been injured, two of whom – students from the Modern College – were seriously wounded and have had to be hospitalised.
According to the Physical Education teacher of Modern College, the students of the Professor Basdeo Bissoondoyal College could not digest the fact that their college was defeated. Angered at such circumstances, they began attacking the other students. While the winners were celebrating their victory, the students from the defeated team began aiming them with projectiles. Students from the Modern College as well as parents who had come to watch the match have witnessed the scenes.
Policemen present at the stadium had experienced some difficulty in managing the situation because of the great numbers of students.
