A Mauritian, working in an American aviation company situated at Benghazi in Libya, is currently stranded there in the aftermath of fights which broke out in the country on Fridaa 16th of May. From what has been reported, a retired General has organised what has been described by the Libyan authorities as a coup d’état. Since Friday, the infighting has resulted in 79 deaths and 142 wounded people.
The Tripoli airport has been closed because of the current political upheavals. In these current circumstances, it is extremely difficult for the Mauritian originating from Port-Louis to make arrangements to return to our island. The airport will remain closed till the 25th.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has assured his family that they will cater for the necessary arrangements to bring back our compatriot. The Mauritian embassy at Cairo as well as the Libyan one in Mauritius have been contacted to relay the information to ensure that the Mauritian is safe and sound.
