Mauritian professional football players will now be remunerated for their work with a Rs 25 000 monthly salary. Also, the football league, recently named the Barclays Mauritius Premier League, will be launched by the end of this month.
Professional football in Mauritius will soon undergo certain major changes. First of all, the professional football league will be given a name: the Barclays Mauritius Premier League. It will be launched on the 26th of October. The professional league will be managed by a private organisation, the Mauritius Professional League Ltd.
This championship will involve the ten best teams having participated in last season’s MFA Premier League, namely:
- Cercle de Joachim SC
- AS Rivière-du-Rempart
- ASPL 2000
- Pamplemousses SC
- AS Quatre-Bornes
- La-Cure Sylvester
- Curepipe Starlight
- Chamarel SC
- Entente Boulet-Rouge-Riche-Mare Rovers.
Today, 16th of October, the above mentioned teams have been officially presented in the George V Stadium.
Rs 8 million per year for salaries
Each team will consist of 12 professional players, 7 amateurs, and 6 aspiring players. The 12 professional players will have to enlist their participation in training sessions twice daily.
The players will henceforth be remunerated for participating in football matches. They will each obtain a salary of Rs 25 000 per month.
The other players will have to train at least once per day. They will also be paid every month.
Each year, Rs 8 millions will be allocated for the salaries of the 10 teams.
