After the Mauritius Sugar Producers’ Association (MSPA) and the employees of the sugar industry failed to have a common agreement concerning their pay rise, the latter decided to take to desperate means.
While the MSPA had proposed for an 8.5 % increase, the workers had aimed for around 38 – 40 %. Having not come to common terms, the employees had previously organised a vote to decide whether to go on strike or not. 80.6 % of them voted for the strike.
The members of the Joint Negotiating Panel (JNP) will therefore go to the MSPA to submit a notice informing them of their decision.
The strike has been scheduled for the 12th of November. However, the members of the JNP do hope that the situation is improved before the fixed date.
