Sony Pictures Held Hostage By Hackers

On Monday November 23, Sony Pictures was the target of  a cyber attack performed by rouge hackers.

It was reported that the hacker group simultaneously targeted the corporate computers of Sony Pictures in New York City as well as other locations world-wide. The computers displayed a cryptic and threatening message to all employees, along with several URL addresses; this message was written on top of a picture of a red glowing skeleton. The threatening message reads as follows:

“Warning: We’ve already warned you, and this is just a beginning. We continue till our request be met. We’ve obtained all your internal data, including your secrets and top secrets. If you don’t obey us, we’ll release data shown below to the world. Determine what will you do till November the 24th, 11:00 PM (GMT).”

The startling news, accompanied with pictures of the message and skeleton were reported be have been first released by a former employee on the web site Reddit.

The culprits of the hijacking and ransom that occurred on Monday, are yet another a group of cyber espionage, vigilante ‘do-gooders’ ; this particular faction of hackers refer to themselves as the Guardians of Peace or GOP. Along with the threatening transmission and ominous cartoon image, it was reported that the group had made off with confidential corporate data that belongs to Sony.

The URl addresses in the messages are noted to be linked to Zip files that contain data and information that is currently unknown to the public.

officials at Sony Pictures have been very hesitant to reveal any other details or information in regard to the attack, but employees at different Sony Pictures branches have reported that they were ordered to disconnect their work computers from Wi-Fi in an attempt to discourage the cyber assault. Currently, no other branches of the Sony corporation are being attacked.

Presently there is no correlation between the current cyber hostage situation at Sony Pictures and the hacker attacks on the Play-Station networks that occurred in August.

This attack on Sony Pictures is one instance in the current wave of cyber attacks that have been occurring across the globe. Several other major corporations, including Home Depot. and the chain retail store Target, have also been victims of the recent surge of cyber terrorism; the hack attack on the Target chain alone affected the financial and personal data of 40 million customers.

Sony Pictures has not yet mentioned if it will or will not portray this incident on film.
