Vishnu Lutchmeenaraidoo, the future minister of finance, indicated that the country has the means to increase the monthly pension of the elderly by the end of this month itself. As a result, the allowance together with the end-of-year bonus will amount to Rs 10 000.
One of the promises of Alliance Lepep is to increase the monthly pension for the elderly. The newly-elected government has reassured the population that it is currently working on it. Vishnu Lutchmeenaraidoo, who is soon going to be the Minister of Finance, stated that he has already been making the necessary arrangements for the purpose. So, the government does have the money to cater for this project?
The ex-PM, Navin Ramgoolam, had previously retorted that if Alliance Lepep wishes to go forward with the project, they will have to increase tax payment. However, Vishnu Lutchmeenaraidoo stated that they do have the means to increase the pension for the month of December after he contacted officers from the ministry of finance. Those entitled to the pension will hence receive Rs 10 000 by the 29th of December.
Those who have already received their allocation for the month of December together with the bonus which amount to Rs 7 246 will receive the rest of the new total (Rs 2 754) by the end of December.
Vishnu Lutchmeenaraidoo also added that other beneficiaries like widows, orphans, and the physically disabled will also have the increased payment.
