Sir Elton John “ties the knot” with his long time, life partner, David Furnish.
The celebrity couple had originally exchanged wedding vows in 2005, during a civil union ceremony at the Windsor Guildhall. Now, after almost a decade, Sir Elton John and David Furnish, a Canadian born filmmaker, have filed all the necessary legal documents, allowing their civil union to be recognized as a legal marriage in the U.K.
It was not a case of cold feet, or commitment issues that created the 9-year gap between the couple’s ceremonies, but the U.K’s stance on same-sex civil unions. At the time of the newly weds first endeavor into civil union, U.K legislation would only grant same-sex couples the same legal protections as heterosexual couples, and would not allow them the title of ‘married’. This most recent ceremony was to amend their old civil union, giving the pair the title of ‘married’.
In March of 2014, Furnish had stated to the Las Vegas Review Journal:
“Since we’re committed for life, we feel it’s really important to take that step, and take advantage of that amazing change in legislation. We all live by example.”
Fans are Cordially Invited to the Wedding
Well, kind of, but not really. What the 67-year-old musician meant by that statement is, the public is not allowed to actually attend the ceremony in person , but they are more than welcome to view any of the pictures that have been uploaded to his recently created InstaGram account, under the handle, EltonJohn.
The award-winning musician has already posted photos of himself and his spouse signing legal papers, the shoes their children will be wearing at the event and as well as many others.
