In spite of all the controversy – and, perhaps, because of it – Sony film “The Interview” became its most online-viewed movie of all times.
The recent controversial incident involving Sony Pictures and North Korea turned out to be a good thing for the former, or so it seems. The movie company alleged to have been hacked a while back, and North Korea was listed as one of the suspects.
Sony Pictures was to release the movie “The Interview” at that time, a movie with an interesting plot that illustrates the planned assassination of the leader of North Korea, Kim Jong Un. Sony alleged having received threats concerning the movie. The FBI has claimed that North Korea was behind the threats. North Korea, on the other hand, had denied having anything to do with the hacking.
In spite of the controversy, the movie was streamed on Google play, YouTube, while more than 300 independent movie theaters screened “The Interview” on Christmas. The latter brought around $ 2.8 million during the Christmas weekend. Sony continued to make money with the movie such that “The Interview” became the number one online film for the firm; it has been bought or rented over 2 million times, thereby becoming the best-selling online movie of all times for Sony.
The president of the company, Rory Bruer, stated: “The number one priority of our unconventional release was to give people the chance to see The Interview. We are very pleased with how it is doing both theatrically where we are seeing numerous sell-outs across the country, and online where it remains at the top of many charts.”
