Rs 4 574 660,78 was transferred from the bank account of the Mauritius Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) to that of Dan Callikan on the 11th of December, just after the proclamation of the general elections last year.
Dan Callikan used to be the director of the MBC before he himself resigned from the post after the proclamation of the results of the 2014 general elections. According to a clause in his contract that had been renewed some months before the elections on the 25th of June 2014, he was entitled to a compensation if he were to leave the post by himself.
The compensation was decided to be tantamount to 18 months of salary.
The State Bank of Mauritius had received an instruction to make the payment to his account on the 11th of December 2014; it was done on the same day the order was given out.
However, it seems that Dan Callikan received more than what he was supposed to. Therefore, he was asked to return Rs 321 045,37.
The ministry of good governance is currently looking into the matter to shed light on the circumstances that led to such an agreement to be contracted. The steps to be taken regarding this case will then be determined from the conclusions of this investigation.
