Lovers of deer meat can now rejoice. The deer hunting season has started. It is scheduled to last till September. The 720 members of the Hunters Society of Mauritius will now hurry to the 81 hunting grounds of the island. The hunting sessions cost from Rs 12,000 to Rs 15,000. The municipal elections will, however, account for a temporary break in the activities, from the 13th to the 15th of June.
Frédéric Merle, the president of the Hunters Society of Mauritius, believes that the production of deer meat will have reached new heights this year.
According to him, 12,000 deers will be hunted this season, as has been the case for the previous years. But, what is going to make the hunting more productive this year is the greater weight of the game. He has explained that the climatic conditions have been favourable this year, and thus the deers have developed into weightier ones.
Around 400 tonnes of deer meat make it to the market every year. The vice-president of the organisation, Jean-Pierre de Sornay, stated that the price per kilo will be set at around Rs 180. The prices might also vary.
