The motion presented in court by the lawyers of Navin Ramgoolam in opposition to the request of the authorities to open the coffers of the ex-PM will be debated on the 22nd of June. Meanwhile, the public prosecution department wishes to have the order to open the coffers renewed.
What is hidden in the bank coffers of Navin Ramgoolam? Will we ever know, and should we even know? According to the police, the contents of the coffers might be helpful to solve the criminal cases lodged against him. However, the latter believes it is nobody’s business as to what they contain.
The bank coffers are shared by Navin Ramgoolam, his wife, and his sister. As much as the coffers are believed to contain incriminating evidence against Navin Ramgoolam, they have not yet been opened because the police has not yet had the authorisation to do so. Furthermore, the ex-PM does not intend to give in without a fight.
His lawyers had thus presented a motion in court to contest the decision of the authorities to open the coffers. The motion will be debated on the 22nd of June, as announced by the chief judge today in Supreme Court.
On the other hand, the authorities intend to ask for the renewal of the order to authorise the opening of the coffers; the order will be invalid after the 14th of June.
