The meteorological station of Vacoas issued a strong wind warning today, 1st of June. Consequently, all educational institutions (pre-primary, primary, and secondary schools as well as training centers of the MITD) are to remain closed today, as per the instructions of the Ministry of Education. The decision was made to ensure the security of students. It is to be noted that university students are not included in the directive.
While students as well as teachers have been greeted with the “good news” in the morning, rectors and non-teaching staff do not get to enjoy the same. They are to carry on with their usual routine at the educational institutions.
The strong wind warning will persist till tomorrow morning. It is to be noted that it is applicable to both Mauritius and Rodrigues.
A strong anticyclone developing at the south-east of the Mascarenes is responsible for the windy, cold and rainy weather. The weather is thus expected to remain cloudy today, with torrential rain in the east and south of the island, as well as on the central plateau.
The winds might reach speeds of 95 km/h in some regions. The strongest winds were recorded at Le Morne (94 km/h), Champ-de-Mars (80 km/h), and Bagatelle, Domaine-les-Pailles together with Nouvelle-Découverte (68 km/h) last night.
Drivers are recommended to take the necessary precautions, specially in foggy regions.
