A bill is being prepared to make room for the Financial Crime Commission (FCC). Consequently, the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) will soon go through a number of changes.
The new system will include all institutions under one umbrella organisation (the FCC) so that the combat against corruption is done in a more structured manner. The available resources will thus allegedly be coordinated.
According to DefiMedia.info, the FCC will be operational as from next year. It will take in the Independent Commission Against Corruption (Icac), the Financial Intelligence Unit, as well as the Asset Recovery Unit together with relevant departments of the Financial Services Commission and the Financial Reporting Council.
The FCC will work as an independent entity.
To cater for the changes, the Prevention of Corruption Act which governs the ICAC will have to be modified.
The Minister of Good Governance, Roshi Bhadain, went to the UK some months ago to take from the experience of the UK Financial Intelligence Unit. Mauritius also benefits from the assistance of the National Crime Agency, and the Economic Crime Command.
Furthermore, the Good Governance and Integrity Reporting Bill was presented in Parliament this week; its aim is to reinforce the combat against fraud and corruption.
