Indian Minister of Women and Child Development, Maneka Gandhi, is reported to have have spoken out against Mauritius for the export of monkeys for use in laboratories.
Minister Maneka Gandhi is the widow of Sanjay Gandhi, the son of Indira Gandhi. In an open letter published this week in several Indian newspapers, she says that Mauritius is the only country in the world exporting thousands of monkeys to laboratories across the world for experimenting.
According to her, Mauritius sent out 9,000 monkeys back in 2014. She further says that as per a survey carried out by NGO Cruelty Free International, 53 % of the participants reported not wanting to travel to Mauritius after learning of the monkey export.
