Indian Scientists Develop Zika Virus Vaccine

Scientists from India claim they have developed a Zika virus vaccine. An epidemic is currently affecting around 20 countries in Latin America, mainly Brazil. Previously, no vaccine existed.

The vaccine has allegedly been concocted by scientists from a laboratory in Hyderabad. This would be the world’s first vaccine for Zika.

Bharat Biotech International Limited, the firm behind the work, says that its vaccine has been patented. Its chairman and managing director, Dr Krishna Ella, states that they have developed two potential vaccines. They made use of a live Zika virus that was officially imported. Dr Ella explains that they are seeking the government’s approval to go to the next step involving animal and human trials.

If everything goes as Dr Ella and his team would like, the company might make one million doses of the vaccine, says the researcher.
