Tropical storm Fantala has turned into a tropical cyclone, says the meteorological station of Vacoas. It was found at 1,170 km north-west of Mauritius today, April 13, at 16h30. It is currently moving in a west-north-west direction at 15km/h.
Tropical cyclone Fantala is currently in the north of Mauritius. Furthermore, an anticyclone is also influencing weather conditions at the south of the Mascarenes. Given the current weather situation and its expected development, a strong wind warning will be in force in Mauritius, Saint-Brandon, and Rodrigues as from 4:00 a.m. tomorrow morning, April 14.
The weather is, thus, expected to gradually worsen in our region. Strong winds of 30 to 45 km/h will bow over the island. Certain areas of Mauritius like Bagatelle, Le Morne, and Port-Louis might even witness winds of up to 90 km/h. Outings at sea in the west and south of Mauritius are, therefore, discouraged.
Heavy swells are forecasted in the region of Agalega and Saint-Brandon (they might reach up to 14 metres in the centre of Fantala). Furthermore, outings at sea in Rodrigues are highly discouraged.
