The State Bank of Mauritius (SBM) situated at Royal Road, Port-Louis, was robbed yesterday night, May 15.
The police has gathered at the bank branch today, May 16, after a security guard from the morning shift opened the bank to find the chaos. Officers of the Criminal Investigation Division and of the Scene of Crime Office, and those from Trou-Fanfaron police station, as well as members of the Crime Intelligence Unit were called to the scene. They are currently examining how much money has been taken away.
According to the initial analysis, a group of thieves were able to get into the bank through a fan-light on Sunday evening; the alarm went off at around 8 p.m. When security guards attempted to find out what had happened, they found nothing unusual, and went back, according to l’Express.mu.
The thieves apparently forced open an automatic teller machine found inside the building. They are also said to have tried to break open a safe deposit whose door was found to be damaged.
