A new form of defense is being developed by the US Air Force Space Command under the name “Space Mission Force”. This project will entail the training of soldiers to react to threats in orbit by using military satellites and weapons; the main aim is to protect US satellites.

A whitepaper, entitled “Space Mission Force: Developing Space Warfighters for Tomorrow”, has been written to detail out the plan, reports the Daily Mail. According to the latter, General John Hyten has explained that space forces will be organised and trained to guard against adversaries who might disrupt space systems. Those having been chosen for the task will be trained for a period of 6 months.
Satellites in orbit managed by the US military amount to around 149 from a total of around 1,380. These will now be further protected through the new mission.
