Tourist arrival in Mauritius increased by 10.8% in 2016, with around 1.2 million tourists travelling to the island.
A total of 1, 275, 227 tourists visited Mauritius in 2016—a 10.8% increase, compared to the year before, 2015. The new figures were revealed earlier today, February 27, in the International and Tourism Report of Statistics Mauritius.
The revenues generated in 2016 from the tourist industry amount to Rs 55.9 billion.
This year is predicted to be better: 1,340,000 tourists are expected in 2017, says Statistics Mauritius, leading to revenues of Rs 58 billion.
Tourists, mostly, come from European countries like France and the UK, and also from Reunion Island. According to Statistics Mauritius, tourists coming from India have increased by 14.6% in 2016 while those from China and Russia decreased by 11.4% and 18.5% respectively.
